CPJ’s new book, A Renewed Canadian Welcome: Eleven Visions from Migrants and Advocates

Canada claims to be a welcoming country that values diversity—but our current immigration policies continue to erode refugee and migrant rights. It’s time to renew Canada’s commitment to welcome by reimagining our immigration policies through the lens of lived experience.

A Renewed Canadian Welcome, born of the work of CPJ and published by McGill-Queen’s University Press, brings together leading scholars and activists to help readers understand the barriers facing refugees and migrants in Canada, movements for human-rights based policies, and moments that have successfully shifted Canada’s immigration policies towards compassion and justice.

The Renewed Canadian Welcome Book Tour: Amplifying Migrant and Advocate Voices Across Canada

The Renewed Canadian Welcome Book Tour - Amplifying Migrant and Advocate Voices Across Canada is happening in the spring of 2026.

This spring, we will be gathering in community spaces and universities across Canada to host events featuring migrants with lived experience and advocates who have contributed to this book. This is your chance to hear from these pertinent voices about the current landscape of immigration policy in Canada and what you can do to advocate for a more just immigration system that treats all people with compassion and dignity.

Praise for A Renewed Canadian Welcome

“This book could not be more timely or urgent. In a world awash with misunderstanding, where suspicion is often directed at refugees and migrants, this volume shows that the best policies are those grounded in human rights, bringing the wisdom of lived experience to the fore.”

Alex Neve, author of Universal: Renewing Human Rights in a Fractured World

“A citizenship ceremony is a joyous occasion, but for many that joy is complicated by the arduous path to arrival. A Renewed Canadian Welcome is a must-read for anyone involved in policy work and for all who seek a country where everyone is treated with respect, fairness, and justice.”

Hardish Dhaliwal, former citizenship judge

“The need has never been higher to rebuild Canada’s public consensus for welcoming refugees and immigrants. This volume illuminates the valuable role of civil society in this work and why the voices of those with lived experience must lead the way to a fairer system for all.”

Gauri Sreenivasan, co-executive director, Canadian Council for Refugees
