Climate-induced migrationโwhen people are forced to leave their homes due to extreme weather events or slow-onset environmental changesโis not a foreign concept for Canadians. In 2023, 200,000 people were forced out of their homes by unprecedented wildfires.
Despite being intimately familiar with the realities of climate change, Canada still lacks any sort of legal pathway to grant asylum to those fleeing extreme weather in other countries.ย The climate crisis forces an average of 60,000 people out of their homes every day. Canada, a country with one of the highest per capita emissions rates in the world, bears a legal and a moral responsibility to those whose lives have been upended by this crisis.
