Refugees and their advocates joined an interesting mix of doctors, provincial politicians, and lawyers this month to cheer a 268-page decision from Justice Anne Mactavish. The Federal Court ruled that the June 2012 refugee healthcare cuts went against Section 12 of the Charter and constituted “cruel and unusual” treatment for claimants and their children.
From The Catalyst Spring 2015 On February 3, 2015, the Dignity for All Campaign released its long-awaited “National Anti-Poverty Plan for Canada.” Support has been widespread: over 15,000 individuals, 600 organizations, and 130 Members of Parliament and Senators have all signed on, agreeing that Canada needs a national plan to address poverty.
Today, CPJ joined Climate Action Network Canada and 29 other organizations from across Canada in writing to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. As he prepares to form a new cabinet, we called on him to put in places mechanisms to meet stronger climate targets that would limit warming to 1.5°.
In response to the announced federal financing for economic recovery, and the oil and gas sector in particular, CPJ joined university and non-profit sector researchers in calling on the federal government to instead invest in a transition that includes retraining fossil fuel workers.
