Human Rights Violations in Canadian Immigration Detention – An Interfaith Call to Action

On February 17th at 6pm EST Human Rights Watch and Citizens for Public Justice will be hosting Human Rights Violations in Canadian Immigration Detention – An Interfaith Call to Action. This virtual event will bring Canadian faith leaders, community members, and religious organizations together to learn about immigration detention in Canada and encourage advocacy initiatives to end this inhumane practice. The event will include a presentation on the recent joint HRW/Amnesty International report, “I Didn’t Feel like a Human in There” Immigration Detention in Canada and its Impact on Mental Health, as well as a panel discussion with faith leaders, mental health experts, and impacted community members. Faith communities play an important role in refugee resettlement in Canada yet many are unaware of the conditions faced by those seeking asylum who are kept in detention. This event is meant to educate, engage, and activate Canadian religious leaders, congregations, and nonprofits on the issues around immigration detention and what we can do to ensure that the rights and dignity of all refugees are upheld.

  1. I read in the Amnesty International report that asylum seekers are handcuffed and shackled. Why this inhuman treatment? They are coming to this country because they were treated similarly in the country they are coming from. The Canadian Border agency is a law unto itself without any oversight.
I hope this interfaith meeting will result in a humane treatment of refugees.
