Voices for Peace 2021 – Radical Hope, Radical Resistance Event #3

Returning to the Nonviolence of Jesus: Following in the Footsteps of Active Nonviolence, Living Gospel Nonviolence Today with John Dear

John DearWhat if Gandhi was right, that Jesus was the greatest person of nonviolence who ever lived? Wouldn’t that mean that to be his follower meant we had to practice total nonviolence, renounce war and every aspect of violence, and work to create a new culture of justice, disarmament and nonviolence? We will reflect on the life of Jesus from a Gandhian hermeneutic of nonviolence for clues about how to practice nonviolence today and do our part to create a more just and nonviolent world.

Cesar Jaramillo is the Executive Director of Project Plowshares, an organization celebrating forty-five years of resistance to violence and war. Cesar’s work has focused on such program areas as nuclear disarmament, outer space security and conventional weapons control. As an international civil society representative, Cesar has addressed, among others, the UN General Assembly First Committee (Disarmament and International Security), the UN Conference on Disarmament, the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), as well as states parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and to the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).
