Brainstorming a safe path forward for climate migrants: Canada’s obligations & opportunities

Climate-induced migration–when people are forced to leave their homes due to extreme weather events or slow-onset environmental changes–is not a foreign concept for Canadians, as our 2023 wildfire season forced more than 200,000 people out of their homes. But when it comes to those fleeing extreme weather in other countries, Canada’s migration policies don’t provide any legal pathway to grant asylum. We need to envision and communicate how we want our country to support climate migrants. Watch the recording of a webinar featuring CPJ policy experts and migration advocates, where we brainstormed a safe path forward for climate migrants.
