Contributing to the Common Good: 2007 pre-budget submission

By Citizens for Public Justice

The House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance has asked what criteria should guide changes to Canada’s tax system.

That is the focus for the 2007 pre-budget consultations. CPJ has submitted a brief [PDF 162kB] underscoring that paying taxes is an important way that citizens contribute to the common good – funding the public infrastructure and services that create a shared and sustainable prosperity.

CPJ’s brief offers public justice principles for Canada’s tax system and recommends that the committee study the impact of recent tax changes. The brief also reiterates that call for a comprehensive poverty reduction strategy – the main recommendation from CPJ’s submission to the 2006 budget consultations. It also recommends converting the basic and spousal credits into refundable credits as a way toward building a guaranteed income for all Canadians.
