Ottawa, ON: November 22, 2018 – Write-offs for business in the name of boosting Canada’s middle-class formed the focus of the Liberal government’s latest fall economic statement.

Missing, however, was any mention of Canada’s new poverty reduction strategy, support for refugees, or investments to keep global temperature increases below 1.5 C.

Volunteers call for the federal government to build on the newly-released Canadian Poverty Reduction Strategy in Budget 2019 to end poverty in Canada.

CPJ released Poverty Trends 2018, our annual report on poverty in Canada, a day ahead of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. It reports that a staggering 5.8 million people in Canada (or 16.8%) live in poverty.

CPJ and the Dignity for All campaign are preparing for our 6th annual nation-wide Chew on This! campaign.

CPJ wrote to the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, Jean-Yves Duclos, to thank his government for following through on their commitment to reduce poverty in Canada, through the release of the first-ever national poverty reduction strategy. 

The federal government launched Opportunity for All – Canada’s First Poverty Reduction Strategy! After years of calling for federal leadership in addressing poverty in Canada, supporters of CPJ and the Dignity for All campaign have made this happen!

Still, the work to end poverty continues. 

Citizens for Public Justice (CPJ), a national faith-based policy organization, has advocated for a National Anti-Poverty Plan for over a decade.
