CPJ enlists U.S. interfaith leaders in cross-border call for refugee and migrant rights

By Citizens for Public Justice

When people arrive on our shores, they expect to have their internationally-recognized human rights respected and upheld. But recently, Canadians and Americans have been inundated with alarming stories and images showing our governments mistreating refugees and migrants, and even showing them cruelty. With the pressure on refugees and migrants in the U.S., Canada could be making compassionate and just policy to act as a safe and fair havenโ€”but instead, we are following America’s lead and enacting harmful policies such as Bills C-2 and C-12, and the Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA).

This unprecedented situation has called for an unprecedented response. In October 2025, CPJ sent a letter to interfaith allies in the U.S. requesting that they join us in urging our own federal government to protect refugees and migrants by upholding their rights. In response, dozens of American faith leaders and faith-based organizations sent a letter to Prime Minister Carney and people of faith across Canada.
