On a bright November morning in Saskatoon, Citizens for Public Justice and our co-applicants had a chance to lay out our case against the Saskatchewan government over its Coal Decision in front of a judge.
In June 2025, Saskatchewan announced that it would continue coal power generation all the way to 2050, even though it had previously promised to end it by 2030. CPJ has teamed up with the Saskatchewan Environmental Society and three residents of Saskatchewan and Manitoba (including a 12-year-old from Regina) to challenge this decision and say No More Coal in Canada!
Glenn Wright, the lawyer representing our group, says “the Coal Decision is likely the most important and costly policy decision on energy in Saskatchewan this century.” At the hearing, he argued that the court can and should require the Saskatchewan government to produce documentation detailing how the government reached their decision in the first placeโeven though the government wants to sidestep the legal challenge entirely by having our application struck.
Gaining momentum: the national conversation on climate justice
The case is attracting national media attention and generating a conversation about climate justice across the country:
