To mark the Season of Creation and lend support to Global Climate Action Week, CPJ is hosting a week-long national prayer chain. Prayers for Creation begins on Friday, September 20 at 12 noon and will continue until 4pm on Friday, September 27, 2019. You are invited to commit to an hour of prayer for the flourishing of creation.
We encourage you to pray however you feel comfortable. You can offer prayers alone, as a family around the dining room table, with a congregation gathered in a sanctuary, or with friends going for a walk in the park. Consider going beyond the usual Sunday-morning-in-the-pews style of prayer. Listen, reflect, and allow yourself to just “be” in creation. However you choose to pray, we hope you’ll join us.
Orthodox and Roman Catholic traditions celebrate the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation on September 1. Many Christian traditions in Canada also mark the Season of Creation from September 1 to October 4.
These invitations to pause, reflect, and contemplate our relationship with the created world are not new. They are, however, generating a broader response as the intensity and urgency of the global climate crisis becomes more apparent. Climate chaos is impacting people, plants, and animals in Canada and across the globe. It is an issue that reaches to the core of who we are as people of faith and how we are to live in God’s world.
Faith leaders have taken note. So too has the UN Secretary-General, who is convening world leaders for a special UN Climate Change Summit in New York City on September 23. This event is galvanizing a response from environmental advocates, social justice activists, trade unionists, people of faith, and many others. The global youth movement, #FridaysForFuture, is leading the way. These young people are concerned for their future and the future of the Earth. They are therefore calling on national governments to adopt policies that will provide a safe pathway to well below the Paris temperature target of 2 C.
#FridaysForFuture coordinated mass global mobilizations earlier this year and have more planned for September. As communities of faith, we understand the value of coming together to pray and work for a better world. People of all ages are invited to participate in the Global Climate Action Week, September 20 to September 27, 2019. It is important that we call come together during this critical time. CPJ is hosting a cross-Canada prayer chain, Prayers for Creation. Please join us!
