Economic and Social Deficits: 2010 pre-budget submission

By Citizens for Public Justice

Every year the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance calls for recommendations and suggestions for the next year’s budget. Currently, Canada is in a period of economic recovery following the recent recession. An economic deficit emerged out of the recession, but these difficult economic times also exacerbated Canada’s social deficit. Canadian social programs often fall short of meeting the needs of Canadians in difficult circumstances, and often keep people in poverty instead of helping lift people out of poverty.

In response, CPJ is calling for a responsible and caring budget that addresses both the economic and social deficits, focuses on building sustainable and lasting change and promotes well-being for all Canadians. Budget decisions are moral decisions: they reveal our values, affect how resources are allocated, and shape our common future as Canadians. CPJ’s recommendations are rooted in the Biblical values of justice, love for our neighbours and care for creation. Responsible investment includes caring for others and promoting sustainable change.
